UNILAG screening documents checklist for freshers, from Skujy Tutorials

Congratulations, Akokite! You've accepted your admission on JAMB CAPS, and you're getting ready to begin life at the University of Lagos.

Your next task is to prepare for screening and registration. In order, that means eight steps: a toxicology test, online screening and appointment booking, physical screening, faculty registration, departmental registration, student association registration, payment of school fees, and finally your matriculation number.

If you thought getting admission tested your patience, brace yourself — the screening "shege" is about to begin! 😂 But don't worry, we'll walk you through what to do, what to bring, and how to avoid unnecessary back and forth. Stay with us, and let's make this journey as smooth as possible.

Here's what lies ahead

1. Toxicology Test: "Before We Welcome You, Let's Check Something" 🧪

You thought the next thing was to pack your bags and enter UNILAG? Hold on, Akokite — there's a toxicology test first. JAMB checked your score; now UNILAG wants to check for drug use. 👀

You'll need to make the required payment, visit the university's designated testing venue, and complete the test. Follow UNILAG's announcement for the payment instructions and where to go.

Once you get your result, keep it safe with your screening documents. It's part of what you'll need for registration, so don't leave it somewhere and start shouting "God abeg" on screening day.

On a serious note, this test is compulsory
Failure to take it or a positive result for drug use can lead to withdrawal of your admission.

Get it done early, keep your result safe, and let's move to the next stop: online screening.

2. Online Screening: Your Brown Envelope Has a Job to Do 💻

Next stop: online screening. This is where you fill in your personal details and upload your documents on the UNILAG student portal (studentportal.unilag.edu.ng).

That brown envelope you've been guarding since secondary school? Bring it out. Its time has come.

Rather not do this yourself?
The Skujy team can do your online screening for you and process your documents, so nothing ends up in the wrong place. Message us on WhatsApp and we'll take it from here.

Get your documents ready

You'll need clear scans of:

  • JAMB admission letter
  • O'level certificate (WAEC/NECO) or its online certificate version
  • Secondary school testimonial
  • Birth certificate
  • State-of-origin certificate
  • Reference letter from a reputable clergyman, imam, lawyer or senior civil servant, addressed to The Registrar, University of Lagos
  • Previous degree certificate, where applicable, for Direct Entry candidates

Check that every scan is complete and readable. No missing edges, blurry names or camera flash covering your date of birth. The screening officer should not need detective skills to read your certificate. 🔍

Complete your bio-data and upload your documents

Log in to the student portal and fill in your bio-data form carefully. Check your names, date of birth and other personal details against your documents before submitting.

Upload each document in the correct space and follow the portal's file requirements. Don't put your birth certificate where your JAMB admission letter should be — both may tell your story, but they serve different purposes.

After completing this stage, print your screening form. Direct Entry candidates should also print their UNILAG online application form. Keep these with the documents you'll take for physical screening.

Book your physical screening appointment

Before heading to campus, book your screening appointment on the portal. Don't arrive with your brown envelope and "I heard they're doing screening today." 🙅

To book:

  1. Open Appointment from the portal menu.
  2. Select New Appointment.
  3. Choose the appointment for your faculty.
  4. Select the correct academic session.
  5. Follow the prompts to schedule your appointment.
  6. Once the booking is successful, print your appointment slip.

Check the date and faculty on the slip, and bring it with you for physical screening. Your screening form and appointment slip are separate documents — you need both.

Documents uploaded, forms printed, appointment booked. Next stop: physical screening.

3. Physical Screening: Your Brown Envelope Goes to Campus 🏫

You've uploaded your documents and booked your appointment. Now it's time to show up in person so the registration officers can check your documents against the information you submitted online.

This is where preparation pays off. You don't want to reach the front of the queue only to discover that your birth certificate is enjoying life at home.

Before you leave home

Go to your faculty's designated screening venue on the date shown on your appointment slip. Check the venue beforehand and arrive very early, allowing enough time to find your way and get organised.

Please, eat before coming and bring drinking water. This journey is not for the weak — your brown envelope cannot hold your place in the queue while you go looking for breakfast. 🥪 Follow any specific preparation instructions for a test you're scheduled to take.

Wear something comfortable and come prepared for some waiting. We're hoping for a smooth day, but let's not put your patience and an empty stomach in the same queue.

What should you bring?

Your physical screening checklist

  • Screening form
Colour printout and a photocopy; sign and date where required
  • JAMB admission letter (institution copy)
    Colour printout and a photocopy
  • UTME result slip (UTME candidates)
    Colour printout and a photocopy
  • Post-UTME result slip (where applicable)
    Colour printout and a photocopy
  • WAEC/NECO certificate
Two copies, plus the original certificate for inspection
  • Reference letter addressed to the Registrar, University of Lagos
    Original and a photocopy
  • Birth certificate or sworn declaration of age
Two photocopies, plus the original for inspection
  • Secondary school testimonial
Two photocopies, plus the original for inspection
  • State-of-origin certificate
Two photocopies, plus the original for inspection
  • Passport photographs
Twelve copies, with your full name written on the back
  • Toxicology test result
Bring the result and prepare a copy for each submission file
  • Appointment/booking slip
Bring the printed slip and keep an extra copy
  • Payment receipts
Receipts for payments made during the screening process, plus extra copies

How to arrange your files

For UTME candidates, the nine main documents run from the screening form down to the state-of-origin certificate in the table.

Prepare two complete sets of those nine documents, each in its own file. Then keep your original credentials in a separate third file for inspection.

We also recommend two extra complete sets for faculty and departmental registration, each in its own file. These are spare sets, not a compulsory requirement everywhere.

Five files altogether

  • File 1
First screening set: the nine main documents, including the original reference letter
  • File 2
Second screening set: the same nine documents, including a copy of the reference letter
  • File 3
    Original credentials for inspection
  • File 4
Recommended spare set for faculty registration
  • File 5
Recommended spare set for departmental registration

Arrange the documents in each submission set in the order shown in the checklist.

You can use colour copies throughout if you prefer. For example, print your JAMB admission letter in colour twice and put one in each screening file. The second copy does not have to be black and white.

Your originals file should contain your:

  • Original WAEC/NECO certificate
  • Original birth certificate or sworn declaration of age
  • Original secondary school testimonial
  • Original state-of-origin certificate

These originals are for inspection against the copies. A colour photocopy does not replace an original credential.

Even if your photocopy is so fine that it looks better than the original, bring the original. We're doing screening, not a printing competition. 😂

Keep your appointment slip, toxicology result, payment receipts and passport photographs easy to reach alongside the files. Follow any additional arrangement instructions given at the venue.

A few details you shouldn't miss

  • Your state-of-origin certificate must match the state registered with JAMB. A local government or LCDA document is not a substitute for the required state certificate.
  • Your reference letter should be on letterhead, identify the referee's position and be addressed to The Registrar, University of Lagos. If a lawyer writes it, it should carry a valid NBA seal.
  • For online screening, you can upload your WAEC/NECO certificate or its accepted online certificate version. For physical screening, bring your original certificate and copies. If you only have the online certificate version, confirm the inspection requirements with UNILAG before your appointment.
A statement of result is not your WAEC/NECO certificate
Don't assume a statement of result issued by your secondary school serves the same purpose as a WAEC/NECO certificate. Don't have your original certificate yet? We can get it for you: message us on WhatsApp.

Extra documents for Direct Entry candidates

If you came in through Direct Entry, also prepare:

  • UNILAG online application form: colour printout and a copy
  • JAMB acknowledgement slip: colour printout and a copy
  • Your qualifying result: JUPEB, A-Level, OND, HND or BSc, as applicable

Include the required copies in your submission sets and bring your original qualifying credentials for inspection. The UTME result slip applies to UTME candidates; follow the requirements for your admission route. New to Direct Entry? Read our guide to Direct Entry into UNILAG.

What happens at the screening desk?

The registration officer checks your documents and confirms that your details and qualifications meet the admission requirements. Keep your originals within easy reach for inspection and submit the requested document sets.

If something needs correcting, ask exactly what you need to provide and where to return. Better to leave with clear instructions than with "they said I should bring something."

Once you've been cleared, keep your clearance document safe and follow the directions for the next stage.

4. Faculty Registration: You Thought It Was Over? Dey Play! 🏛️

You've finished physical screening and you're ready to breathe a sigh of relief? Hold that breath small — your documents still have a faculty to visit. And after that? Your department. 😅

Remember those two extra document sets we advised you to bring? This is where they may save you a trip to the photocopy shop.

After physical screening, the officer will return one set of your documents and direct you to your faculty. Present that set and follow the faculty registration instructions.

You may be asked to submit copies, complete forms and make the applicable payment. Requirements vary by faculty, so the officials there will tell you exactly what they need.

As a planning guide, allow around ₦10,000–₦30,000 for faculty and departmental registration charges. Confirm what each office charges and whether payments are separate before paying.

Yes, your documents need preparation, and your wallet does too. Admission congratulations cannot settle the bill. 💸

Before leaving the faculty, confirm that you've completed its requirements and ask what to take to your department.

5. Departmental Registration: Another Desk, Another "Welcome" 🚪

Faculty registration done? Good. Now take your documents to your department for a separate registration process.

The procedure is similar: present your documents, provide the requested copies, complete any forms and confirm the applicable payment. Your remaining spare set may come in handy here.

Requirements and charges vary by department, so let the departmental officials tell you exactly what they need. Don't assume everything was covered at the faculty.

And don't rely entirely on "my friend said." Your friend may be in another department, enjoying a completely different episode of registration shege. 😂

Keep your payment receipts safe. Before leaving, ask whether your departmental registration is complete or whether anything remains outstanding.

6. Student Association Registration: Your Brown Envelope Can Rest 😌

Finally, a stage where nobody is asking for your birth certificate or another photocopy. Student association registration doesn't require documents — just payment.

You'll register with your faculty and departmental student associations. Allow around ₦6,000–₦12,000 for applicable dues, and confirm the amount with each association and whether the dues are collected separately.

Make your payment and keep the receipt or confirmation. This part is usually straightforward and stress-free.

After all that walking and photocopying, a process that lets your legs rest small? We'll take it. 🙌

7. Payment of School Fees: You Can Finally Go Home 🏠

Campus waka done? You can handle this next part from home.

After completing physical screening and receiving clearance, allow about 24–48 hours for school-fee payment to become available on your portal. That waiting period may run while you're handling your other registration tasks.

You don't need to remain on campus waiting for it. Your physical presence will not make the portal activate faster — go home, eat and let your legs recover. 🍲

Pay from the comfort of your home

Once payment is enabled:

  1. Log in to the UNILAG student portal (studentportal.unilag.edu.ng).
  2. Generate your payment advice and check the amount due.
  3. Follow the payment instructions provided on the portal.
  4. Confirm that your completed payment reflects on the portal.
  5. Save and print your payment receipt.

Use UNILAG's designated payment channel and check your details before completing the transaction.

The 24–48-hour window is an estimate. If payment remains unavailable beyond that period, contact the appropriate university office for assistance.

If your faculty or department asks for proof of school-fee payment before completing registration, make the payment first and return with the receipt.

8. Getting Your Matriculation Number: Your Akokite Identity Has Landed! 🎉

Your matriculation number is issued after you pay your school fees. Once your payment reflects, check your student portal for it.

After all the uploading, photocopying and walking, you finally have your own UNILAG student number. Please, this one is worth saving somewhere better than a loose piece of paper. 📌

Keep it safe — you'll use it throughout your time at UNILAG. If your payment has been confirmed but your matriculation number hasn't appeared, contact the appropriate university office.

Congratulations again, Akokite. Now you can start preparing for the part where your lecturers also have documents for you — called assignments. 😂
