Getting into the University of Lagos takes years. There is the JAMB score you studied months for, the Post-UTME you sat with your heart in your mouth, and the long wait before your name finally appears on the admission list.

Then the invoice arrives.

For many families, first-year school fees and hostel charges come at the worst possible time: after a job loss, in the middle of an illness, or simply in a month when there is nothing left. The deadline does not move, and a place that took years to earn can be lost in a few weeks.

The Mr Ogbonnaya & Mrs Onyekachi Scholarship was created so that doesn't happen to you.

What the scholarship does

The scholarship gives emergency fee support to students who have just been admitted into 100 level at UNILAG and cannot pay what they owe. It can go towards your school fees and your hostel fees.

The money is never handed out in cash. If you are selected, it is paid straight into the official UNILAG channel or your Remita / portal account, so it goes exactly where it is needed: clearing your fees and securing your place.

Who can apply

The scholarship is for one group of students: those offered admission into 100 level at the University of Lagos this session, through UTME, who cannot pay their school fees or hostel fees and could lose their place as a result. If you are shortlisted, you will need to show your UNILAG admission letter, JAMB admission letter, pay advice and a means of ID.

It is not open to returning students or to students who came in through direct entry. If NELFUND, another scholarship or a bursary already covers all your fees for this session, the place should go to someone who has no support at all.

Because you are brand new, you don't need a matric number or a UNILAG student email to apply. The application uses your JAMB registration number and any email address you check regularly. (Your matric number comes after screening and school fees; our UNILAG screening guide walks you through every step.)

You don't need perfect results

Many students talk themselves out of applying for scholarships because they assume only top scorers win them. That is not how this one works.

An assessment committee reads every application and weighs six things: your family's financial need, how urgent your situation is, how much difference the grant would make, your UTME and O'level results, any exceptional circumstances you have faced, and how you help the people around you. Your results matter, but they are one part of a much bigger picture. If you are in genuine need, apply.

How to apply

The whole process happens online, and you can do all of it on your phone.

  1. Check that you're eligible. Three short questions confirm that you are a new 100 level student who isn't already fully funded.
  2. Complete the application. You will be asked about your household, your fees and your UTME results, in nine short steps. Your answers save on your device as you type, so a dropped connection won't cost you your progress. When you submit, you receive a reference number straight away. Keep it safe.
  3. Watch your email. Shortlisted applicants receive a personal link and access code to upload their supporting documents.
  4. Fees paid directly. If you are selected, the award is paid into the official UNILAG channel or your portal account.
Have these ready before you start
Your JAMB registration number, your UTME score and O'level results, and the exact amount on your UNILAG pay advice along with its payment deadline. If you are under 18, you will also need your parent or guardian: the form asks for their name, their phone number and their permission.

How to give your application its best chance

Apply early. Applications close on 29 October 2026 at 11:59pm, and the last day is the worst day to fight a slow network.

Check your JAMB number twice. Each JAMB registration number can only be used for one application, so a typo is hard to undo.

Use an email address you actually read. That is where your shortlist link will arrive. Look in your spam and promotions folders too.

Tell your story honestly and plainly. The form asks why you need this support. You don't need fancy English. Explain what is happening at home and what the scholarship would change for you. Specific, truthful answers are the ones that stay with a committee.

Frequently asked questions

Can I apply if I'm on NELFUND?

Yes, as long as NELFUND doesn't cover all of your fees this session. If your application is still pending, you were only partly awarded, or you haven't been able to apply, you are still eligible.

I'm under 18. Can I apply?

Yes, with your parent's or guardian's permission. The committee may call them to confirm.

Will the money be paid to me?

No. It is paid directly into the official UNILAG channel or your Remita / portal account.

When is the deadline?

Applications close on 29 October 2026 at 11:59pm.
